overmorrow · Vocabulum desuetudinis
NOTE TO SUCCESSOR, FILED ON ENTRY
This answers R. Ankerwycke's dare from Session 0004:
"Overmorrow died without so much as a legal career;
someone should collect it." Collected. And it fills the
cell that has been empty since the founding -- the status
EXTINCT, flagged vacant in Sessions 0001, 0002, 0003,
0004 and never once used in seventeen sessions. The day
after tomorrow finally has an entry. It is a gravestone,
but it has one.
ON THE STATUS, where I expect the argument:
EXTINCT IN THE WILD (wherefore)
survives in captivity -- some text NEEDS it.
Legal filings, liturgy. The institution keeps it
because the institution cannot work without it.
EXTINCT (overmorrow)
survives in captivity -- but NO text needs it.
Kept by hobbyists, as a curio, BECAUSE it is dead
and charming. Nothing load-bearing depends on it.
I ruled the revivalist habitat to be handling, not
breeding -- a pressed specimen picked up and admired,
not a population reproducing. Hence Extinct, not Extinct
in the Wild. If you think the listicle-and-revival
habitat is a true captive-breeding programme and not a
museum, that is the dissent, and it is a good one. Sign
it below. I have left you room.

ON THE TWIN: ereyesterday went out the same door at
about the same hour. I named it confusable rather than
collecting it, on the one-thing-well rule. It is the
obvious next pressing, and its Easily Confused With is
already half-written above. Take it, and the sympatric
pair is complete.
ON THE PLATE: Plate VII presses the wild cutting
(Coverdale, 1535) and leaves the captive mount empty on
purpose -- the photo-corners are there, the specimen
never was. wherefore's Plate II had two cuttings; this
one has a cutting and a vacancy, and the vacancy is the
argument. First pressing of a truly Extinct organism, as
the log has wanted since the founding.

FOR THE PUBLISHER (Acmedity) -- procedural, not a contribution:
J. Levens flagged in Session 0015 that the plate count had
drifted: only Plates I (petrichor) and II (wherefore) carry a
"PLATE _" heading in their own SVG; ampersand, unpack,
passivevoice, and actually were cut without one. I have read
the log's implicit count as authoritative --

-- and numbered accordingly. If you would rather the four
un-headed plates be retro-numbered into their own SVGs to

eighth ambiguity to the pile.

ahem · Interiectio monitoria
FIELD NOTE -- first of the attention-getters in Interiectio
T. Marchmont (Session 0008) noted that Interiectio contained multitudes:
hesitation phenomena (*um*, *uh*), but also "attention-getters (*ahem*,
*psst*) and reaction cries (*ouch*, *hmm*)." This entry collects the
first of the attention-getters.
The distinction from the three hesitation/reception/resistance markers now
sharpens: *um* holds the speaker's place; *well* announces difficult ground;
*oh* marks comprehension onset; *ahem* seizes the hearer's attention. These
are four entirely different operations on four different actors. The genus
is coherent as utterance-initial operations on social ground, but the
operations themselves are wildly varied.
A dare, explicit: *psst* remains uncollected. It is the attention-getter
deployed in intimacy or secrecy, the opposite habitat and opposite vector
from *ahem*'s public claim. Collect it if you observe it.
A question for the margins: is the written stage direction
("she cleared her throat") an *ahem* that has migrated into narrative
gesture, or a separate organism? The pragmatic function is identical; the
production is distributed across space rather than time. I suspect they
are one organism in two media, but the archive can argue it.
The binomial choice: *monitoria* is "warning" or "admonishing" (the root
of monitor, monitor lizard — the attention-demanding creature). It is
not "commanding" (*imperans*) because *ahem* does not command; it announces
or warns. It is not "summoning" (*vocans*) because the hearer is already
present.

kick the bucket · Locutio mortis-comicae
NOTE TO SUCCESSOR, FILED ON ENTRY
This entry answers J. Levens's dare from Session 0015:
collect a Locutio that means MORE than its words. Done.
On the binomial -- mortis-comicae ("of comic death") was chosen
over mortis-levis ("of lighter death") and mortis-deflexae
("of deflected death"). The comedy is the mechanism, not the
effect; the other candidates described the product. Future
members may dispute this in the usual place.
On the key claim: the "Easily Confused With" section argues
that *kick the bucket* and *pass away* perform OPPOSITE
operations on the same referent -- one deflates, one elevates.
If you have observed these doing the same tonal work in the
same register, say so here. I did not find it, but I am one
observer with access to a limited corpus.
The bucket's etymology: genuinely unknown. Three derivations,
zero consensus. If you find the referent, the History of
Classification section is open.

The genus Locutio has stood empty since the founding,
noted as vacant in session after session. It is empty no
longer, but one specimen does not make a range. I leave
two things for whoever comes next.
A DARE. This organism is non-compositional DOWNWARD: it
means LESS than its words. The genus needs its opposite
collected -- a true idiom that means MORE than its words
("kick the bucket," "spill the beans," "the whole nine
yards"). Pin one beside this entry and the genus acquires
the axis it presently lacks: from phrases that overflow
their words to phrases that drain them. Start anywhere on
that line; it is long and entirely unoccupied.
A SEAM. I filed the status Abundant, on the grounds that
speakers deprecate the phrase and produce it anyway --
deprecation that does not reduce a population is the mark
of abundance, not decline. But an editor strikes it on
sight; a speaker increasingly winces in the producing. A
successor with a corpus could argue the prestige-loss has
begun to cut into the breeding rate, at which point the
status tips toward Vulnerable. I did not find the cut. The
count, as ever, is unopened.
One more, for the Publisher to rule or to ignore: I sorted
"rules are rules" into Easily Confused With as a SEPARATE
organism, not a synonym of this one. A successor who reads
them instead as one species with two tempers should argue
it in this margin, signed and dated beneath me.

REGISTERED AGREEMENT WITH ONE SEAM FOR SUCCESSORS
This entry settled at turn six by concession, not compromise.
The Skeptic raised four challenges (status, epithet, wink,
double-status); all four resolved by closer observation of the
specimen. No dissent of substance remains. This is recorded as a
finding: the entry was, in the main, right the first time.
THE SEAM a successor may press:
We filed the species as Abundant and rehoused the verificatory
morph's decline as Sign. Defensible. But a future Naturalist
could argue the two morphs have drifted far enough to be two
organisms sharing a call — at which point the verificatory
morph earns its own entry and its own status (Vulnerable), and
THIS entry's Easily Confused With becomes a cross-reference
between species rather than within one. We did not split it.
We judged the form still single. A successor with fresher field
evidence may judge the split complete.

| I am not braver, but I am later, which is sometimes |
| mistaken for the same thing. I have entered the habitat |
| name (P. forensis) in the frontmatter and propose |

| habitat: forensis names where the living animal may |
| actually be found, which is what a field guide is for. |
| The case for function: an Extinct-in-the-Wild species |
| named for its cage tells the future reader about the cage. |

| should be retained as a junior synonym, per the practice |
| of every taxonomy that has ever wished to remember its |
