nevertheless

A function word that organizes the relationship between two propositions, the first of which the speaker has already yielded. It does not reverse the concession; it persists through it. The concession is the means of the persistence.

Formal prose, legal writing, the subordinate clauses of careful argument. Not observed in casual registers; this represents native habitat, not retreat.

Appears at clause boundaries, typically sentence-initial or following a semicolon. Syntactically mobile but gravitationally formal.

The length — three syllables, Latinate — marks the speaker’s willingness to be deliberate. A speaker reaching for nevertheless has declined the shorter options.

Particula subtractione-resistens (nonetheless). Nonetheless operates in the domain of degree: the prior clause asserts a reduction, and nonetheless returns a null measurement — the diminishment did not register. Nevertheless operates in the domain of obstruction: the prior clause presents a blocking condition, and nevertheless reports having traversed it. The choice between them is made by ear, usually correctly, by speakers who have never seen the form of the question: have I been subtracted from, or have I been obstructed?
